Aperture allows you to adjust the depth of field within your shot, this works best for picturing landscapes and shooting in macro. The unfocused area becomes less of a distraction from the main focus point of the picture.
Here I have shown the difference between a large and a small aperture. As you can see the apple is in focus in both images. When the aperture is at its lowest the more out of focus the background becomes.
The second image shows the background object in focus as the aperture is at its largest (remember by having a larger aperture your image will darken so you must adjust the iso or shutter speed to compensate).
