Learning the basics… Cameras part 1

These days everyone has a camera of some kind, ranging from Phone cameras to a compact Digital, DSLR or even an old film camera. They may look different and have all kinds of features but at the end of the day they all do the same thing… capture your memories!

We love the retro Look and will never count out the good old film photography! We have a love for the whole process of film and the “you don’t know what you’ll get until you see it” when developing, thankfully you can still get your films processed at your local supermarkets and even put on a disk making them digital.

Praktica MTL5 and Brownie No2

As the old style photos are coming back with sites and apps such as Instagram and Snapspeed you can create your retro look images, but you can never discount the good old film cameras to get the original retro feel back into your life.

Being able to taking photos is one thing but leaving them on your camera to never see the light of day is a waste, since the digital era getting your photos printed has never been easier, there are many photo printing websites and even large supermarkets that all offer deals or even free prints. As a company we offer a full digital service from expert Photography, custom editing, photo restoration and even custom prints.

We will continue to use a film camera to get the “retro looks” but due to film processing not being cost effective we will use digital and film cameras side by side.

So why not go back and get Retro this Thursday!! post us your retro photos on our Facebook page, Digital or even film!!

Learning the basics… shutter speeds

Shutter Speeds allow you to change the amount of time the shutter is open.

The Streets

Shutter speeds can be fun to play with. Longer shutter speeds allow more light in, but remember not to over expose your images, this will reduce the detail within the picture. The above picture was taken over a 30sec shutter speed, this is a good way of showing movement within any image. It also allows you to experiment with lights (image below). This took a few attempts but the result is pretty good. Remember that a longer shutter speed will require a sturdy tripod to avoid camera shake and to get the detailed picture you wanted.

Merry Christmas

A quick shutter speed can also be very interesting to experiment with, I captured these water droplets (below image) from the melting snow on the shed roof. My shutter speed was set at 1/2000s and you can see that it was a bright day so the ISO was high, giving me a chance to adjust the shutter speed to allow as little light as possible to capture in high speed.

Learning the basics… Aperture

Aperture allows you to adjust the depth of field within your shot, this works best for picturing landscapes and shooting in macro. The unfocused area becomes less of a distraction from the main focus point of the picture.

Here I have shown the difference between a large and a small aperture. As you can see the apple is in focus in both images. When the aperture is at its lowest the more out of focus the background becomes.

The second image shows the background object in focus as the aperture is at its largest (remember by having a larger aperture your image will darken so you must adjust the iso or shutter speed to compensate).

Learning the basics… Landscapes

From experience we find shooting landscape images repetitive unless you can travel and get to see different sites and destinations and not have a full time job. When using water reflections it is best to get a divide from the land to the water of about 40% water and 60% land/sky, the lower you get to the ground when taking the picture the more impact-full the image will appear (this is a personal preference). The mirroring that you create from the water can be more effective in the early mornings when the water is more still and create a glass like appearance.

The wind was too strong throughout the day so could not get the still water reflection.
